My Story…
UPDATE (May 2, 2022): The grand total raised by the end of marathon day was exactly $2,847.00, which I've matched with a donation that you can see below. Thank you to everyone who donated!
------------------------------
In May 2020, my dad was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer with no known cure. It's been tough for our family, and of course for my dad most of all. But we've also learned a lot from these circumstances; for example, did you know that one in two British Columbians will face cancer in their lifetime? I didn't!
Around the same time as my dad's diagnosis, I got back into running, going for longer and longer distances until I injured myself during a half-marathon in May 2021. I remember thinking at the time, "who would be crazy enough to run a full marathon?"
Apparently, I am! On Sunday, May 1, 2022, I will be participating in the BMO Vancouver Marathon as a charity runner for the BC Cancer Foundation. BC Cancer has provided an incredible level of care for my dad throughout screening, diagnosis, and treatment, all at no cost (my dad will be on a $300/day drug for the rest of his life, but we haven't paid a penny out of pocket thanks to them). BC Cancer's impact extends far beyond my family, and even beyond British Columbia; I'm excited for the chance to give back to such a great cause.
I will be matching all donations made to this fundraiser up to the day of the marathon!* That's right, your contribution of N dollars will count for not just N dollars, but 2N dollars! Any amount you can give is appreciated; no amount is too small.
If you'll be in Vancouver on Sunday, May 1, 2022, I'd love to see you out on the course—either cheering runners on from the sidelines or participating yourself (there are options ranging from 8 km to the full 42.195 km marathon). You can learn more, view the course map, and register at https://bmovanmarathon.ca/.
Thank you all for your support!
Arthur
*Assuming this doesn't bankrupt me. To be precise, I'll make my donation in one lump sum, equalling the total raised by the end of day on May 1, 2022.
