My Story…
Dear friends and family,
My teammates and I are training for the Calgary Marathon and fundraising for a charity that is just newly near and dear to my heart. As most of you know, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis late last year. Although it was a devastating blow to hear, I’m trying to use my diagnosis to bring awareness to the disease and to raise money to support MS research. After learning about my diagnosis, I found out that “Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world. There is an estimated 90000 people living with this diagnosis and the unpredictable effects of the disease will last for the rest of their lives.
MS is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Since that includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve, MS can affect vision, memory, balance and mobility. It is considered an episodic disability meaning that the severity and duration of illness and disability can vary and are often followed by periods of wellness. It can also be progressive.” -https://mssociety.ca/about-ms
As soon as I received my official diagnosis, I knew I wanted to make good on my goal of completing a full marathon before I turned 40. Even though I am still a few years off from that point, I know how quickly things can change for me medically, so it seemed like no better day then that day to start training! Instead of focusing on my fears, I am using running as my therapy and taking my diagnosis day by day. Currently, I am so lucky that I have the ability to even train to run 42.2 kilometres.
My teammates, Sarah and Stephanie, have been major influencers to my healthy well-being for years. I am so lucky that not only have they been my cheerleaders, they have also agreed to train for a full marathon with me in May.
One day it is my hope that living with MS can be a thing of the past and it can just become a footnote on my medical record, until then, please feel free to support this cause that is so meaningful to my teammates and I.
Thank you all so much for all of the love and support,
Sara
