My Story…
In June of 1993, Helen Privett and Maria Vetrano created Against the Tide the swim to fight breast cancer. Against the Tide is the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition's main fund raiser and has raised $3 million over its 29-year history. CORRECTION: Someone just told me it is the 30-year anniversary!
We just wanted to do something that would help not only women with breast cancer, but families and friends also impacted by the disease. Before Against the Tide, there was no other fundraising event, held in the Boston area, to raise money specifically to fight breast cancer. We decided to organize a swim event while enjoying a day at Walden Pond and with the help of friends, assembled the event in eight short weeks. That first year there were 84 swimmers and we raised $16,000.
