My Story…
In 2017, our son was having a hard time. His frustrations over things that were simple for other children his age were starting to come out as behavioral issues. My wife, a LICSW with her Masters in Social Work, began to look for any help regarding life after NAS (neonatal abstinence syndrome). At the time NAS was the term for a child who was born with in utero substance exposure that was battling withdrawal. Doctors believed that after 8 months the child would grow and meet milestones the same as any other child. When she could not find any information or services for our child, my wife began a peer-to-peer group for caregivers who were raising children born with NAS. Through this group we found that our children had similar needs and To The Moon And Back was born. 5 years later our child any many others are thriving because they now have access to all the tools they need. In fact, our youngest child is now the same age that our oldest one was when this nonprofit was launched and now he is beginning to receive the same tools and is thriving because of this.
Recently, To The Moon And Back have contracted the Child Trends firm out of Boston, MA to research and develop best practices in care for raising children born with in utero opioid exposure. We're doing all we can for these children and if a 7 mile run on a hot August day can help to continue our mission I'm happy to do it!
