My Story…

On April 16, 2018 I ran the Boston Marathon for the CF Foundation. Tyler was in the hospital, it was absolutely pouring, my IT band was shot and I may have cried for at least 10 miles but it was an experience of a lifetime. In the months leading up to Boston I witnessed a community come together for my best friends through not only donations but event attendance and genuine interest in this cause. I crossed the finish line that year with a final donation of nearly $40,000 thanks to this incredible network.
In April of 2019 we lost Tyler to complications of his CF. April 24 was one of the most painful days of my life. I’ve always found an understanding for why things happen but at the time I had trouble understanding this. What I did understand was how much I adored his life, his family, his friends, and every single memory we made and those he made with others. I felt so fortunate for our childhood and the 28 years we spent on this earth together (even if a good 15 of those included him keeping me incredibly humble).
This April, despite how much I miss Ty, I am grateful. In the months following the marathon we learned a large sum of that year’s fundraising was used to help the FDA research and expedite approval for a new drug. Trikafta, a specific gene modulator, has significantly changed the lives of qualifying CF patients since.
Luckily for us Zach and his cousin Eli qualify and we have been able to see directly what a positive impact discoveries like this make. This April Zach is healthy, can absolutely smoke me in volleyball, and is still the funniest, kindest, and most intelligent person I know.
Unfortunately, there is still a percentage of individuals with CF who cannot benefit from modulators like Trikafta. They may not carry the correct gene sequence, be intolerant of side effects, or be too far along in their disease process and listed for transplant. The work is here not done. For that reason I, along with some of the most thoughtful/athletic individuals I’ve come across in our Boston fitness community, will be running The Falmouth Road Race for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on team Patron’s Pacers.
Donate to help Megan raise money for The 2022 ASICS Falmouth Road Race’s fundraising campaign.
