The 1st LT Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund is excited to return to Cashman Park for the 11th Annual Flag Day 5K road race. The 5K walk or run will be hosted on June 11th, 2022 at Cashman Park in Newburyport, MA. We look forward to gathering in person this year as we continue to honor 1st LT Derek Hines and provide financial assistance for Massachusetts’ soldiers, and their families, who have incurred serious, career-ending, and life-altering injuries while on active duty.

About Run for the Troops
Run for the Troops 5K is a tax-exempt 501 c(3) nonprofit organization that was initially formed to raise funds to support the mission of Homes for our Troops. Homes For Our Troops builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide to severely injured post-9/11 Veterans. In recent years our mission has expanded to support the Veteran services provided by Ironstone Farms and Homeland Heroes Foundation.

WHY WE RUN
A 2003 graduate of the United States Military Academy, 1LT Derek S. Hines, 25, died on September 1, 2005, in Baylough, Afghanistan. His unit was conducting security operations and came under attack by enemy forces using small arms fire. Even after he had been fatally shot, 1st Lieutenant Hines continued to fire at the insurgents. Derek showed that same fortitude in everything he did.
Shortly after Derek's death, the Hines family started the 1st Lieutenant Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund to carry on Derek's legacy. The mission of The 1st Lieutenant Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund is to provide financial assistance for Massachusetts’ soldiers, and their families, who have incurred serious, career ending, and life altering injuries while on active duty.
