My Story…
In 1970, my HBCU story started in the South Carolina State College caf when the basketball team tried to jump three freshmen girls in line. One of those girls was like “NOT TODAY YOU WON’T.” It was a scene apparently! 🤣 Long story short, that girl married the basketball captain two years later. My parents would leave Orangeburg, South Carolina and ultimately end up in Nashville, Tennessee. As a result, I grew up on the campuses of Tennessee State University (where my dad coached and taught), Fisk University (where I spent afternoons and summers) and Meharry Medical College (where most of my doctors where trained). All around me was Black Excellence. I, however, didn't know what I saw was unique. Many years later, I, too, would become a HBCU grad. Clark Atlanta University provided an advanced degree, hard-fought lessons and lifelong friends who are quite like family. I want to ensure others have that same opportunity without the financial weight many experience.
