Every day, The Darling Home for Kids is entrusted to care for the most medically complex children. Our highly specialized Residential, Respite, and Hospice Palliative Care Programs draw children and families from all over the province. More than 70,000 children in Ontario are classified as medically complex, and that number continues to rise, as does the demand for our services.
Proceeds from the Rally for DHK will help to support our core programs and services. With your help, we can provide each child with the best care possible.
*Registration fees are not eligible for a tax receipt.
Event Flow - How does the Rally for DHK work?
The Rally for DHK will start at 8:00am from The Darling Home for Kids. To accommodate all of the vehicles teams will be assigned a departure time, with cars leaving every 3 to 4 minutes from the Home. Check in, get your Rally Kit, filled with goodies and tools for the day, your car decal and grab a coffee and bite before you depart.
The Rally is comprised of three legs, each ending at a different location. The total length of the Rally depends on your strategic and navigational skills and powers of observation. If you get lost and have to start over, or you strive to find every clue, it might take you longer. Each route has a pre-determined time value. If you arrive too early, you will be penalized as this is not a speed race. If you are late, there will be deductions as well. You need to make smart decisions as you navigate.
In addition to driving accurately, you are required to observe landmarks along the way based on the clues in the instructions and documenting your answers. Pay attention, some clues may require you to exit your vehicle! Ensure when doing so that you are aware of other vehicles on the road and only do so at a moment when it is safe. Points will be awarded for correct answers, however you may end up losing more points if you take too long to find them all. This is where strategic thinking comes into play.
Generally speaking, plan to spend a wonderful day, touring the area that surrounds The Darling Home for Kids. Some of you will breeze through the Rally; others may track their GPS later that day and find it looks like a Jackson Pollock painting. Enjoy the day and know that your fundraising efforts are making a difference in the lives of families with medically complex children.
Your instructions will be given in both direction and distance variants. please are various examples of each that you could be given at the event.
Direction Variants
- Plain text – Written directions in the form of left, right, straight
- Pictorial – Images representing left, right, straight
- Cardinal – Written directions in the form of east, west, north south in which you will need to turn in the specified direction
- Interpreted– Shapes representing each turn
- Triangle = Right
- Square = Straight
- Circle = Left
Distance Variants
- Odometer Reset – Each instruction has an explicit distance independent of the instruction before it. For example, instructions 1, 2, and 3 may have 2.4km, 1.1km, and 700m respectively in which you will travel 2.4 kilometers, turn in the direction indicated - reset your odometer, travel 1.1 kilometers - reset your odometer, etc.
- Running Odometer – In this set of instructions, you reset your odometer to zero and you are making your turns based on the distance listed in your instructions. You’ll note that the distances listed are constantly increasing, as it is based on the kilometres travelled. Be aware that if you go off course, or go back to a step, that you note your odometer reading.
GOOD LUCK!
