My Story…
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month. This month is very important to me, not only in my profession as a NICU nurse, but also in my personal life, as our family has been impacted by it an a way that we never could have imagined.
Chris and I welcomed Felix Alexander, born on May 6th, 2022, after an uncomplicated pregnancy and easy labor. After delivery, he was taken to the Neonatal ICU for what we thought was a hypoxic injury during birth; something that I see at work regularly and I know can have a full recovery. During his NICU stay, his condition continued to worsen drastically and it appeared that this was not as straightforward as we had previously thought. The morning of May 7th, we were told that there was nothing more that could be done and we said goodbye to our sweet boy that day. We are still searching for answers through the pain and heartache of our unexpected loss.
I know that I am not unique in my situation, as 1 in 4 women will experience the loss of a pregnancy or infant. That is why Chris and I are raising money for Mikayla's Grace, a foundation that supports families who have children in the NICU and families who have lost their babies. Some of our most cherished items are from the memory box we received from the hospital, donated by Mikayla's Grace, on the day that Felix passed. Please consider donating to this wonderful cause so they can continue to help families like ours on their worst days.
All our love,
Grace, Chris, and baby Felix Long
