It's that time of year again when Adam and I set out to run the virtual @justiceformileshall Miles for Miles Turkey Trot! Every year I pledge a mile with the only goal of not getting lapped by Adam while he completes the 5k.
I hope you will consider joining Team Flynno this year from wherever you are or at least donating to this important, and near to my heart, cause. In 2019, Miles Hall was killed by Walnut Creek police when his family sought help while he was having a mental health crisis. Since that time, The Miles Hall Foundation has fought tirelessly to implement non-police intervention in mental health crisis and this year successfully created "988," a crisis hotline that will provide 24/7 support and be able to deploy crisis services--such as mobile crisis teams, crisis stabilization, and follow up care and referrals.
For those of you that don't know, my own mom, and her father, both suffered with mental illness throughout their lives. Having to call 911 on your loved one in a mental health crisis is trauma inducing and often escalates already tense situations. It can be even more dangerous if you are a Person of Color. I'm still processing those events from my childhood. Which is why, as families of people who suffer with mental illness, we are asking for alternatives and real mental health care for our loved ones.
