Cullen was born on March 24, 2008 in Bowling Green, KY. He is the youngest of three children with an older brother and sister. Cullen was born with VACTERL syndrome. This is made up of several medical issues which include GI, pulmonary, scoliosis and a complex heart condition. His medical issues have caused him to have numerous surgeries over his lifetime including 6 open heart surgeries.
Despite Cullen’s medical issues he doesn't allow them to define who he is. Cullen is a fun, loving little boy who enjoys many things. Top on his list are his animals. He has a boxer named Lilly, a guinea pig named Sookie, and a horse named Winnie.
Because of his complex medical issues, Cullen tires easily and cannot be overly active but he still tries and has many things he enjoys. He loves to travel and go to the beach, fish, play golf, and go to hockey games with his favorite team being the Nashville Predators. He also enjoys cooking, playing video games, dinosaurs, anything Disney which includes Star Wars and Marvel, playing the drums and listening to music, and just being with family.
On Friday, September 2, Cullen was rushed to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital via ambulance and admitted to the PICU for Covid pneumonia. While there he continued to try and fight but on Thursday, September 8, his world crashed. As they were placing a feeding tube, he went into cardiac arrest. The team performed CPR on him for 30 minutes and was finally able to get him to a point where he could go onto ECMO (life support). During an echo of his heart right after the event, they discovered he had developed large blood clots in his heart and had to rushed to the OR to have his 6th open heart surgery to remove those clots. Cullen stayed on ECMO for the next 11 days and was able to come off on September 18, but has had to remain on the ventilator to help him breathe. After another week or so and 2 rounds of pneumonia the team of doctors knew he was not going to be able to come off the vent anytime soon and the recommendation was for Cullen to have a tracheostomy placed so he could start to heal while still getting the pulmonary support he needed along with having a g-tube placed so he could receive the needed nutrition.
Each day since the trach and g-tube surgery, Cullen has been making strides with some days having two steps forward and one step back but he continues to fight and is doing well. At this point we do not know when we will make it home because the plan is still for Cullen to go to Indianapolis for inpatient rehab. Things are tough, but we can do hard things. The hard things is what will eventually get us back to doing all the things he loves. Cullen is full of determination and has a big heart and even though we are going through a tough battle he still continues to push forward and we try to find the positive in every situation.
