If it wasn’t for the discovery and approval back in 2000 of a drug called Herceptin, my HER2 breast cancer diagnosis would have had a very different outcome and I wouldn’t have made it. To say that I am forever grateful for the research & care that has saved my life, is a huge understatement!

As you may or may not know, 25 years ago, after my Bubbi Jackie was diagnosed with breast cancer, she and my Aunt Ellyn launched Team Holzman at The Ottawa Race Weekend. Who knew that I, a little 12 year old girl, walking and cheering on her family’s team, would be facing my own diagnosis a handful of years later. Since then, they have raised an incredible $350,000 to support cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital through the Ottawa Race Weekend and other initiatives. 

After beginning my own cancer journey this past year, I cannot get over how grateful I am to be able to keep going, and have the opportunity to give back. I owe so much to research and to those donors and leaders, like Jackie & Ellyn, who continuously make a difference in the lives of those with a cancer diagnosis. I was told to celebrate every step along the way, and I can’t think of a better way to show my appreciation and gratitude than to get the team back together and give back!

We have all been impacted by cancer, and like so many others, I am terrified of the possibility of recurrence, but what keeps me grounded and hopeful, is knowing there are incredible humans discovering and finding new treatments and medicines that could save my life and others! These funds truly give hope to my own ongoing treatment and treatment to come, and to those dealing with a new or recurring cancer diagnosis every day.
