2023 Annie Malone Annual May Day Parade
PARADE RULES
The Annie Malone Annual May Day Parade is for the entire St Louis community. The Parade Committee insists upon proper conduct throughout the staging area and parade route. You and your unit will be on display before thousands of your fellow citizens, parents, and children. Please behave accordingly.
After Annie Malone receives your completed registration, we will confirm your registration. Information packets will be issued at the MANDATORY meeting on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 10 a.m. at 3900 Goodfellow Blvd., St. Louis, MO.
This is a FAMILY EVENT and we ask that you adhere to the following RULES:
CONDUCT: All participants must conduct themselves in a respectful, civil and orderly fashion.
- There is a zero-tolerance policy toward dangerous/reckless driving at any time!
- No provocative or sexually explicit dancing! This includes twerking, gyrating, and body movements/contortions that are sexual in nature
- Appropriate clothing must be worn.
STOPPING: No stopping is permitted unless directed to do so by Parade Officials. Entries must start/restart immediately when directed by Parade Official. In order to keep the parade moving and eliminate gaps within the parade, no performances in front of the judge’s stand or Review Stands will be permitted. Units must be in a continuous moving forward direction.
NOT PERMITED: The following are not permitted:
- No Glass Bottles
- No Alcohol
- No CBD
- No Fire or BBQ in staging or on units
- No Fireworks
- No Skates, Skating, Skateboards, Big Wheels, Scooters, Electric Scooters, Motor Scooters, Mopeds, Go Karts, ATV, or Golf Carts unless specifically approved.
VEHICLES: All street vehicles must comply with Missouri laws regarding registration. Proof of insurance must be held for each motorized vehicle. Entries using non-street vehicles must hold proof of blanket insurance coverage for all vehicles and participants in the entry. All units must be driven by a licensed and insured driver.
GIVE AWAYS: All items that are distributed with your unit must be passed out at the curb.
NO THROWING! The items must be Family Friendly. No cans or bottles may be given out. If the item is for a business promotion, the unit must be a Sponsor of the parade!
Children riding or walking with a unit must be supervised by an adult at all times.
UNIT INFORMATION:
- NO Promotion, Signs, or Handing out of alcohol, tobacco, CBD, or other non-family friendly items on or with the units.
- Individual groups and units that have sponsors provide funding, services, and/or materials to them may NOT put the sponsors’ names on the parade entry unless they register as a unit of the Parade.
- Any unit with a generator must carry a fire extinguisher.
- Animal Units are required to clean up after their animals in Assembly, Parade Route, and Dispersal. They are also required to provide Certificate of Insurance. Proof of liability

insurance must name Annie Malone Children and Family Services as certificate holder
(e.g., COI). Insurance must be in the amount of $1,000,000.
- Floats - A wheel walker is a person who walks next to the float, (by the wheels) to prevent anyone from trying to get items on the ground, climbing on (or off) and who could notify the driver of any problems that would require immediate action for the safety of all. The wheel walker is an important measure in the safety of the parade. One wheel walker is required for each wheel.
UNIT SOUND: Very loud music or noise will not be allowed within the line-up area. Sound systems may be tested, but only for a few seconds. Music may be turned on only on the parade route STARTING AT 20th and MARKET. The Music must be immediately turned off at end of the parade at 7th and MARKET. The only music allowed to be played along the parade route is Family Oriented music. The style of music and the volume at which it is played must be pleasant, tolerable, and acceptable for all listeners, especially children.
STAGING AREA:
- Follow the directions of the Parade Marshal in staging area, route, and dispersal.
- Parade participants are required to be at their assigned spot in the staging area no later than the times provided in your Registration Packet which will be distributed at the MANDATORY meeting on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 10 a.m. at 3900 Goodfellow Blvd., St. Louis, MO. Your assigned positions the only spot you will be allowed to occupy.
- Only those units designated in your application and approved by the May Day Parade Committee will be allowed in the parade. No other automobiles, trucks, vans, or other parade participants will be authorized or allowed in the parade.
- Please keep your unit in your designated line up area and follow the instructions of the Assembly Team. Safety necessitates keeping portions of Market Street open and passable. Emergency vehicles may continue to use Market throughout the day.
- It is the responsibility of each parade unit to keep your staging area clean of any trash.
UNIT NUMBERS: Your Unit Number must be displayed at front of your unit for all to see.
Parade Officials will remove participants who are in violation of these rules.
