My Story…

My family and I have decided to run a race this October in memory of my father, Eric Johnson.  He lost his life to cancer this year on May 29th.  after a 5 yr journey of battling 3 different types of cancers.  We want to honour him by bringing awareness to the BC Cancer Foundation and if you’re able to donate for research.

His story,

He was first diagnosed in 2019 with diffuse large B cell lymphoma non Hodgkins which after successful chemotherapy treatment was put into remission for 3 years. His second cancer appeared in the summer of 2022.  After several blood transfusions, bone marrow biopsies and thinking this was the end, a second cancer was discovered, chronic small lymphocytic lymphoma.  Miraculousy after starting treatment the cancer was put into remission again.  Lastly this past May, sudden onset of rapidly declining blood counts appeared, his bone marrow was failing to make healthy blood cells the diagnosis being myelodysplastic syndrome.  Most likely caused by previous treatment.

Ive just named 3 types of cancer out of possibility of over 200.  I wish I didn’t know these names but I do and many people right now are learning these names and becoming familiar just as we did.  One of the last things my dads oncologist told him that he was sorry and wished the science was further along.

My dad was so grateful  for the support and care he received at the Victoria Cancer Clinic.  Angels is what he called the people who worked there.  He would become overwhelmed with emotion trying to explain how much it meant to him, all the work they were doing to take care of him but it was impossible to express in words.

The Emergency department which became his second home during turbulent times played a vital role in supplying him with blood transfusions.

In honour of my dad and the organization that he believed in so strongly, I’m asking for donations to the BC Cancer Foundation.
