My Story…
I'm participating in the TCS Marathon 2023 in honour of my boyfriend and partner in life of 7.5 years, Austin Sun. He fought a long and hard battle with glioblastoma of the spinal cord.
CNS cancers are some of the worst types out there because these tumours are so difficult to treat, and it's especially hard to see young, previously healthy adults get diagnosed with them. As a recently graduated pharmacist working with cancer patients at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre, I watch patients fight their hardest everyday and am reminded of how strong Austin was.
Austin was such an athletic and active individual; he was on every sports team in high school (volleyball, badminton, curling, ultimate frisbee, you name it!) and he loved the outdoors. I only recently picked up running this year and having this athletic outlet helps me feel connected to him while also fundraising for this marathon on October 15.
He received his treatments at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and I would accompany him to some of his appointments where I was able to witness the exceptional patient care he was provided. He fundraised for PMH for his 22nd and 23rd birthday, and I am glad we are carrying his legacy on for what would have been his 24th birthday on October 26. Cheers to Austin Sun!
