My Story…
I thought I retired from the marathon distance, but it turns out that I missed running long, lonely miles in the sauna of the Cayman Islands. So even with temps still hitting 107+ real feel in mid-October, I’m trying to slog my way through another training cycle to be able to finish marathon #36 in early December. (Then #37 in January and #38 in March.)
Once again, I’m raising money to support CCMI - Central Caribbean Marine Institute. Coral reefs in Cayman have faced a very difficult year - from disease to warming ocean temperatures - we have seen unprecedented bleaching because of the relentless heat that has enveloped the Caribbean due to climate change. We still have hope though for survival of reefs as we know they can be resilient in the face of change. It’s just not known how resilient - or how much of our reefs will survive this season and into the future.Your donation helps our researchers and the research to understand more about resiliency and what we can do to help corals have a better chance of survival as years like this are sure to come more frequently. It also helps us offer scholarships for local students to attend immersive education programmes at our research centre in Little Cayman, helping them to connect to the oceans and marine life that is literally in their backyard.
Any amount you can give toward my effort is greatly appreciated! Donations of at least $25 will get you a mile dedicated to you (or a loved one) - a tradition I have done since my first half marathon to help push me when the running gets hard. I have 26 miles to fill - can I get enough people donating to take all the miles???
