I have run the falmouth road race nearly every year. It is my most favorite race to run. Ever year I set up at the start line pumped and then I hit the black top with the sun blazing on me at nearly 90 degrees and my body feels like death and I usually pee my pants, because that’s just what I do..and I look around me and second to Boston, Falmouth has the best crowds, and I smile because this feeling means I am alive. Every step I take reminds me I’m so damn lucky to be doing this. In 20018 I met Mike Fogarty and his amazing wife Kim Baxter. They interviewed me for a position caring for Mike as he battled ALS. I knew the moment I walked into their house, I was exactly where I was suppose to be. Taking care of Mike was the honor of my life. It’s not often that you get to care for someone who becomes your bestest buddy. Mike was mine. The bond that was formed between Kim and I, is one that no one will ever take from us. When I say Mike fought the toughest battle with dignity and grace, I am telling Kim did as well. I got to know Mikes children and I learned so much from their family about life and mainly about love. But don’t be fooled mike made me laugh more than most. When he passed away a small part of my heart felt like it died, but it didn’t, it was actually growing. It grew this little corner that will forever belong to him and his family. ALS is a beast of a disease. It’s frankly disgusting. I hate it! But the only way I can carry the baton and try to help others who fight is by raising awareness and hope in a cure. So for all the “Mikes” out there living and fighting, I run for you. Please consider helping me meet my goal for CCALS who I personally think are an amazing group of people who do amazing things for those battling ALS.
