Cancer touches so many in a deep way. As a survivor in a family of survivors I may have dragged them all into my purpose: 'doing something'. Without the family, my friendships, and the Oswego community our challenges would have been so much more difficult. Keeping that in mind, we will contribute differently each year to a cancer fund that means something to one of us. I hope many of you will come join us for a day of fun, or just donate, volunteer, or cheer!
Each year we at Ritzkids Crush Cancer select a family member in whose name we make our donation following the race. 2023 funds raised will donated to fight stomach cancer in honor of Cynthia DeLauri.
Cynthia was a wife and a young mother when cancer took her life. Her son is my son-in-law, Nick. Nick was just a baby when he lost his mother to cancer and his dad became a single father of two. Over the past few years, I have quizzed Nick gently about the loss, the changes to the family and his memories. To be honest, much of what I know comes from my daughter Hailey. What Nick did tell me is that he was so very young when he lost his mother, that he recalls how hard his dad worked to keep he and his older sister, Angela, safe and happy on his own. He speaks with great respect for the trials and adventures the three of them went through in the days and months following their great loss. Pictures of his mom and a beautiful Christmas heirloom are a few of the things that keep Cynthia alive in the heart of my son-in-law.
Cancer has the ability to take an un-refundable toll on a family, we here at the Ritzkids Crush Cancer foundation want to do what we can to help families remember their loved ones like Cynthia with a donation to help others in their fight against this terrible disease.
As in many families, we also have another family member who suffered from stomach cancer and survived: Jane Zerrahn. Jane was the mother of our very own honorable RitzKid, Carl Zerrahn.
We will making our 2023 donations to No Stomach For Cancer honoring these two wonderful moms.
