Saturday, May 6, 2023
Garcia Bend Park, 7654 Pocket Road, Sacramento, CA 95831
Come walk, jog, skip, run or roll and join us for the inaugural hosting of "Not Just For Runners” (NJ4R). NJ4R is a community event for all physical abilities, created to bolster physical and mental health in underserved communities and those that identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). REI is the presenting sponsor for this event, and the event will include a 5K and 1-mile event, followed by a health and wellness fair.
Here are some details to help you on event day:
CONSTRUCTION ADVISEMENT: There is currently construction at the park, however it will not interfere with our event. The boat launch parking lot has been fenced off as a construction zone, however a pedestrian walkway leading from the park to the top of the levee, via the boat ramp has been accommodated for us. Respresentatives from the City, County and US Army Corp of Engineers have been notified about the event, and have worked hard to ensure the safety of our event and its participants.
WEATHER: The forecast currently has rain scheduled in the early hours but clearing before our 9am start time. We will move forward with the 5K/1-mile and healthfair, rain or shine, so please be prepared just in case the sprinkles stick around a little longer.
PARKING: Parking is available in the main parking lot at the part; there are approximately 75 spots available. Additional parking is available on the streets and in the neighborhood.
ATTIRE/CLOTHING: Dress in layers and wear comfortable clothes you can move in and supportive shoes for walking. This is an interactive event and we want you to join in the movement.
BIB PICKUP IS ONSITE FROM 7:30AM-8:45AM: If you didn't make it by REI this week, you can get you can check-in for the event and pick up your bib number and swag bag at the park. If you have friends or family who still want to join for the 5K/1-mile, they can register at packet pickup.
RACE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND PROGRAM START: Announcements will start around 8:00-8:15am, with our official kickoff to start at 8:30am. We'll have opening remarks by Councilmember Rick Jennings, and Miss Cecelia Carraway will grace us with her voice. Remarks and song will be followed by a fun, lively, low impact group warmup led by Fiesta Nutrition.
5K & 1-MILE EVENT: The 5K/1-mile will be held on the Sacramento River Parkway, which is a paved, two lane bike and pedestrian pathway. There is a slight incline as we walk up the boat ramp to the top of the levee, but otherwise, the route is level and unobstructed. Anyone who feels they need assistance up the walkway can let our volunteers know and they will be happy to escort you. We will have volunteers on the course providing support until our last finishers comes through. There is an aid station with water, electrolytes and fuel at the 5K turnaround point, and cones and signs will mark where to make the u-turn for both distances.
