For participating in Butterfly Run Vancouver

Our story…

Myself, Leah, our two boys Sam and Lucas, as well as baby Josie are participating in the Butterfly Run in memory of our sweet daughter, sister, and twin Naomi, who passed away shortly after birth.

On August 30th, 2022 at a routine ultrasound to check on our identical twin girls it was found that at some point between that day and 2 weeks prior, our girls had developed acute TTTS (Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome) and possibly TAPS. Leah was 28 weeks + 4 days pregnant. Up until this point the pregnancy had been perfect. The prognosis was not good for both girls, but particularly for Naomi who was not expected to survive due to severe complications. Her sister Josephine was very sick too, but we weren't sure just how sick she was. We were absolutely shocked and devastated by this news. While we knew the pregnancy was considered high risk, we just never imagined this would happen, especially so late in the pregnancy.

Leah was rushed to BC Women's to decide on the next steps. A few hours later both girls were born by C-Section.  Naomi was born first at 5:31 PM weighing 2 lbs 7 oz. and Josie was born one minute later at 5:32 weighing 2 lbs 1oz. Josie was stable enough that she was able to spend a short amount of time with her sister. Once side by side and touching, they reached for each others hands and amazingly both their heart rates and breathing stabilized. Their twin bond as strong as ever.

Naomi lived for 5 hours. In that time we were able to cuddle her and talk to her. We told her it was okay to let go and she didn't need to fight anymore. Within minutes after that she was gone and free from pain. She passed away peacefully in her daddy's arms. We are so grateful for those few hours we had with her. The hole she has left in our hearts is immense and we grieve for her everyday. We talk about her openly and visit her at the cemetery often. We all miss her so much.

Her sister Josie spent a week and a half in the NICU at BC Women's in the bumble bee unit before being transferred to SMH to be closer to home. She spent a total of 61 days in the NICU with little to no complications. Today she is a beautiful, healthy baby and doing so well.  She is such a bright light in all our lives and we are in awe of how far she has come - a true miracle who had all the odds stacked against her. Our family is so grateful to BC Women's for all their support during such a difficult time. Every person we interacted with at the hospital was so kind, caring, and did everything to make us as comfortable as we could be.

We would be so happy if you could help us by cheering us on (from afar or in person), come walk with us as part of Team Naomi, or donate to this important cause in Naomi's memory.

With Love,

The Northcotts
