Run for kids like Fred.
Five years ago, Bonnie Taylor of Huron, Tenn., received a phone call that would change her life forever. The Department of Child Services told Bonnie about an 18-month-old boy at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital who would soon be discharged without a home placement. Without hesitation, Bonnie agreed to foster Fred.
Born at 25 weeks gestation, Fred spent nine months in Le Bonheur’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Fred was considered a failure to thrive baby — he required G-tube feedings and had a tracheostomy to help him breathe. Bonnie is a nurse and experienced foster parent who had fostered children requiring complex medical care, yet Fred was the first toddler with medical needs that Bonnie would welcome into her home.
Before Fred was discharged from Le Bonheur, Bonnie received training on cleaning and changing his tracheostomy tube as well as how to feed him via G-tube. Le Bonheur provided the resources and guidance to help Fred thrive at home.
Bonnie frequently made the 200-mile roundtrip journey from her West Tennessee home to Memphis for Fred’s specialist appointments, but a few years ago Le Bonheur opened an outpatient clinic in Jackson, Tenn. Bonnie is able to take Fred to see many of the same specialists he would see in Memphis closer to home.
Bonnie and her husband, Rick, fostered Fred for more than two years until formally adopting him in October 2020.
“Fred is a miracle boy and Le Bonheur saved him,” Bonnie said. “Our family would be lost without Le Bonheur and Fred would not be here today without the expert care he received.”
Today, 7-year-old Fred is thriving! He sees Le Bonheur specialists for follow-up care every three to six months and is able to breathe on his own without a tracheostomy tube.
The Taylor family is so grateful for Le Bonheur Children's. When you participate in this year’s Pumpkin Run, you are making a difference for kids like Fred.
