WHAT IS OUR WHY?
On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. 1 in 15 children is exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.
Many battered women, teens, and children in low-wealth communities experience difficulties accessing resources due to a lack of finances and specific cultural or language barriers. The high rates of domestic violence and higher rates of physical and mental health problems mean that poor women and children affected by DV because of exposure to social violence, trauma, and socioeconomic factors like unemployment are likely to have more complex needs in our service area.
Youth who are at risk of abuse and have experienced trauma in the form of physical abuse, neglect, and community violence in the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County are in high need of training, resources, and safety planning services. (2, 3, 13). In North St. Louis County, students identified greater concerns regarding threats of violence or being injured by another peer than in other regions. (7).
The goal of JADASA is to heighten awareness about the issues and preventive measures against abuse and provide information on community resources. JADASA recognizes that the strength of survivors, their families, and friends encourages those who felt silenced to have a voice!
