Wakaf berasal dari perkataan Arab: waqafa. la membawa berbagai pengertian, antaranya: berhenti, menegah dan menahan. Dari segi istilah, wakaf ialah menahan harta yang bermanfaat, serta kekal fizikalnya, untuk diberikan pada jalan kebaikan dengan tujuan mendekatkan diri kepada Allah SWT.
Wakaf Tunai MAIWP kini diuruskan sepenuhnya oleh Pusat Pungutan Zakat-MAIWP.
