Dogs: All dogs MUST be in a harness designed for running and pulling. Dogs must be 12 months of age for events 5km or longer. Dogs must be 10 months of age to compete in events up to a distance of 2km.
Canicross: A canicross belt & bungee line is strongly recommended though any hands-free running leash will be acceptable. The distance from the competitor's abdomen to the base of the tail of the dog must be at most 2 meters, when tight without elongation. However, the recommended distance is 1.70 meters. As this race is a MAHDS sanctioned event, this competition will utilize the MAHDS race rules.
Rules:
Because harness dog sports involve more than human athletes, our rules for participants incorporate more than the expected rules to ensure fair competition. These rules also address factors that can impact the health and safety of our canine and human teammates - things like the age of the dog for competition, sport-specific gear requirements for humans and dogs, trail rules (such as passing), and good sportsmanship.
All participants must review and adhere to the following documents prior to race day:
- MAHDS Rules for Participants
- MAHDS Code of Conduct
Both of these documents can be found on the MAHDS website HERE.

The trail is winding with many branch-offs but will be very well marked.
The trails are fantastic. Although safe and gorgeous, expect roots, rocks, mud, ups and downs, twists and turns, and variable terrain of dirt, moss, pebbles, and small bridges. Don’t forget to take some deep breaths and enjoy the scenery. This is what Canitrail is all about!
We do recommend warming up on the Sprint course if you arrive early enough and make sure to wear appropriate footwear for the race.
The Standard Route:
The course is approximately 4.5 km in length.
You will start on the flowy Blue Trail singletrack with a slight uphill grade, then merge onto the pebble Orange Trail double track (there will be a very short section with a snow fence in the middle to divide the trail in 2 opposite directions. Approximately 5-10m of possible head-on passing). You will then hop onto another Blue Trail singletrack (mostly uphill) that will bring you to the top of the Orange Trail double track to finish your race.
Along the singletrack, you will cross streams of water that you can use to let your dog drink if needed.
The Sprint Route:
The course is approximately 2.0 km in length.
You will start on the flowy Blue Trail singletrack with a slight uphill grade, then merge onto the pebble Orange Trail double track (there will be a very short section with a snow fence in the middle to divide the trail in half to accommodate for the Standard route). You will continue on the Orange Trail double track down to your finish line.
We will use the Crooked Tree Trail (orange on the trail system - see map at the bottom) and the Rhodora Loop (marked blue on the trail system). All other trails will be blocked off with flagging tape.
