Fireco Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon (est 1988) introduces Battle of the North.
The Kai Iwi Tri was once on every triathlete's annual event schedule, and this is now Northland's only triathlon. This one of New Zealands longest running triathlons. Originally starting with a swim or kayak at Promenade point on Lake Taharoa into a 12km hilly run to State Highway 12. From there it was a 27km bike into Dargaville finishing off with a 200m run to the open doors of The Central Hotel and pub.
In recent years the event no longer traverses to Dargaville but stays at the tranquil Kai Iwi Lakes and Taharoa Domain. It has become a great family event with Sport Northland doing a fantastic job of running a kids triathlon, a Try a Tri and Sprint distance triathlon. Kayak options are still available too.
This year we will see the inaugural Battle of the North commence and triathlon club's from the upper north island fight it out for the Kauri shield. Both participation and podium points are on offer with the winning club taking home the Shield and other numerous prizes.
Whangarei Triathlon club (host club) will be doing all they can to be the first club to win the shield.
