My Story…
I've always been drawn to water. It should be no surprise, to those who know me well, that I have come to live on the shoreline of Lake Superior (No salt, no sharks). Since being here, I've begun to develop a relationship with gitchigami - the big lake. I have great reverence for her, and so far, she has given me reasons to trust her. Still, I am cautious.
Open water swimming has always intrigued me; and more recently I've decided that I'd like to learn how.
The Bayfield Rec Center hosts an event each year - the Point to LaPointe Open Water Swim (a 2.1 mile swim from Bayfield to LaPointe, Madeline Island). The event serves as a fundraiser for the Rec Center, which provides year round recreation including swimming, sailing and exercise classes for people of all ages. The Bayfield Rec Center has the only pool in the area open to the public.
Fully aware that it is only myself that gets in the way of accomplishing my goals, I have decided, after years (decades) of hesitation and procrastination, to do something about that.
Yearning to get back into shape in the pool and motivated to educate myself in open water swimming, I signed up to participate in the non-competitive division of the Point to LaPointe race. I bought a family membership to the Rec and have begun my training in the pool. My husband and daughter gave me the extra push I needed to get started by diving in themselves. I'm super proud of all of us.
I am humbly asking those that are able to please donate to support the Bayfield Rec Center.
Thank you!
