Friends and family,

You all know that cancer will touch most of our lives: directly or indirectly, sooner or later, it’s a sad fact of life. 

The good thing, however, is that as a result of groundbreaking medical research, cancer care and treatment have been transformed in the last 25 years. More and more patients can hope for a positive outcome, and a growing number of families can spend more time together with their loved ones due to an ever growing number of available treatments. All these therapeutic innovations are the result of the hard work and dedication of researchers, clinicians and scientist who have dedicated their lives to stamping out this devastating disease. And there is no better place to see this hard work and dedication than here in Pittsburgh at  UPMC’s Hillman Cancer Center. 

I have the great privilege to work with many of the big hearts and great minds at Hillman on a daily basis. Our singular goal at UPMC Enterprises is to use all of our resources to help clinical researchers and scientists succeed in finding new therapies that will make a difference patients. Yet when faced with a foe as formidable as cancer, no level of support is sufficient. There is always more we can do, and my commitment to cancer care thus goes far beyond what i do on the job. This is why my family and i will again be riding the Rush to Crush cancer this year. And for us it is personal: We wish some of the treatments available today would have been available 35 years ago, when my 10 year old cousin Andre died of gastric cancer. Or even 20 years ago when my aunt Inge could not beat triple negative breast cancer. With the treatments available today, they may still be with us.
