6th Annual Don Hartlaub Memorial 5K

Lace up your shoes and mark your calendars for the 6th Annual Don Hartlaub Memorial 5K

Proceeds go to the Don Hartlaub Memorial which benefits the local programs.

The Don Hartlaub Memorial, not-for-profit, is elated to announce that the 6th Annual Don Hartlaub Memorial 5K will be on August 2, 2024. Lace up your shoes as the Annual Don Hartlaub Memorial 5K race starts that evening at 7:30 p.m. Official timing by ShaZam for serious runners and walkers are welcomed. We will also have a 50m and a 100m Kids' Fun Run.

The 5K was established to honor Don for all his efforts, dedication and accomplishments in local sports and continue to give back to the area in his honor.

June, 2017, Don was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, grade 4 brain cancer. He fought hard for the following nine months and passed away on March 17, 2018. Don's true love and passion was track and field. His love began in high school, carried over to running in college at Millikin University, where he was inducted into the Millikin's Athletic Hall of Fame. Upon graduation from Millikin, he began his education and coaching career and coached track for over 40 years. In the 40 years he went above and beyond for his athletes. He was the co-founder of the Capital Area Classic coed honor roll track meet in 1981, still held today. He also coached girls basketball at Riverton for years and established the Sangamon County Girls Basketball Tournament the top female player in the tournament receives the Don Hartlaub MVP. Even after retirement he still gave to the sport by clerking and timing at local meets, and following all local runners in track and cross country. Proceeds go to the Don Hartlaub Memorial not-for-profit which benefits local sports programs, including but not limited to a $500.00 Scholarship for the recipient of the Girls Sangamon County Tournament Don Hartlaub MVP Award, track equipment and much more. This past year your contributions provided new long jump boards at the Riverton track and field, blocks, pole vault poles, food for athletes, attire and many other miscellaneous items. This Memorial has only been possible with the support of so many.
