I’m Stepping it Up for Science because…
Those of you who know me and/or Scientists in School, know that I've been passionate about the lasting and life-changing impact that Scientists in School workshops have for elementary students since I first choose to spend my time as a classroom workshop presenter in 1992. Within two years it was a volunteer role at the helm of the organization, and within seven it was formalized to the role of Executive Director when the organization structured as a registered non-profit and charity initially serving Durham Region, and soon - well beyond.
This has given me the opportunity to hear first-hand SO many stories of life-changing impact from past participants in our richly investigative STEM workshops, or via their teachers and parents. Today Scientists in School is a leading science enrichment organization for young Canadians. Over our 35-year history we have engaged over 11 million eager K to Grade 8 scientists in investigative workshops, led by passionate STEM role models who help every child dream of a future they perhaps never thought possible until they became scientists in school. In the 2023-24 school year, 320,000 students coast to coast had Scientists in School workshops, and each year since the pandemic’s impact, we've taken big annual leaps back towards our pre-COVID 700,000 annual youth participation.
I'm particularly proud to lead a team of extraordinary people who collectively give their best day in, and day out, to inspire the scientists of tomorrow. They do so with a lens to ensuring exceptionally strong inclusion of youth in communities that face barriers for opportunities for their youth and their schools. This includes but is not limited to: low income, rural, Indigenous, and northern communities, and students with exceptionalities. Together we can nurture their curiosity, help them to question intelligently, think critically, and become tomorrow's researchers, innovators, engineers, environmental stewards, and thoughtful citizenry.
With our 2020 launch of a second richly investigative workshop model - an Online version with materials packaged and sent ahead - we embraced the opportunity to scale from our two long-time provinces served (Ontario and Alberta) using both Onsite and Online workshops to embrace inclusivity for classrooms across all of Canada's provinces and territories. I'm asking you to celebrate and support our national scaling journey and our continued rebuild from the financial impact of the pandemic. My personal fundraising goal is $4,000 as part of our team goal of $24,000 in the 2024 Toronto Waterfront Marathon. This might well be my 10th time participating in this fundraiser event 😊 I hope you will visit my fundraising page.
All my best, Cindy
Description
Donate, and help me Step it Up for Science!
I’m taking part in the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon and helping Scientists in School raise $24,000 for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment workshops across Canada.
Your donation will help bring hands-on STEM workshops to children in low income, rural and remote communities from coast to coast, giving them the opportunity to BE a scientist in school today, and BECOME the researchers, engineers and technologists we need for tomorrow.
Every donation makes a difference for young scientists!
- $27 helps us pack neat goodies into mini science bags, one for each student in the class
- $52 helps us buy the neat stuff for those mini science bags -- from salt to string to soap to stir sticks -- so each student can experiment
- $300 helps us deliver a hands-on interactive workshop for a whole classroom
- $6,500 enables us to Adopt-a-School, delivering hands-on workshops to every class and student in a low-income school
- $12,000 helps us develop a new curriculum-aligned workshop
