THE CUMBY Is About Supporting The Cumberland Community Forest
THE CUMBY is a fundraising event in support of the Cumberland Community Forest Society's efforts to purchase and preserve large tracts of pristine forest surrounding the historic town of Cumberland. To date, The Cumby has raised $177,500 for this great cause, and the Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR) is officially listed as one of the select few "Guardians of the Forest". We are pleased that the running community continues to generously support this cause.
You might notice our registration fees are unchanged from last year. We keep registration fees low relative to similar trail racing events so please consider donating to the CCFS when you register. Tax receipts will be automatically issued for all on-line donations of $20 and up.
The race theme this year is a play on our May 4th race date - "May the Forest be with You" and reminds us all that our goal is to preserve this incredible recreational area. Large tracts of forest in our area are being cleared, so as runners we need to support and celebrate the great work of the Cumberland Community Forest in acquiring and preserving the forest surrounding Cumberland. And this year we also show our appreciation and financial support of The United Riders of Cumberland who provide a vital link between the forestry companies and all of the recreational users on their land. UROC puts huge effort into ensuring a network of paths is controlled, kept clear, and accessible to all. Without the hard work of CCFS and UROC, we would simply not have these beautiful trails to run on!
Our Race Rules and Guidelines Are Very Important
For everyone's health and wellbeing we require you to closely read and abide by the Race Rules and Guidelines presented on our website www.thecumby.ca. Please note this is a wilderness race and runners must be prepared to use good judgment to keep themselves safe with adequate fuel and fluids and be able to follow a marked course.
No pressure, but ...............
Registration numbers are limited and we always sell out quickly. This year is capped at 900 participants so avoid disappointment and register early.
We will accommodate racer transfers between races up to April 21 if there is room remaining in the distance you wish to transfer into. A nominal transfer fee will apply and you will need to pay the difference if the new event fee is more than your original registration fee. You may not transfer or sell your registration to another runner. All race registrations are final - no refunds.
Three Challenging Courses
Our race routes are gnarly, rocky and include tough climbs and fast descents. To make sure you never get bored at The Cumby, we have modified last year's routes. The FULL Cumby is ~26 km, the HALF Cumby is ~16 km and our QUARTER Cumby is ~7.5 km. Check out our website www.thecumby.ca for more detailed course information - you can find maps under the "Choose Your Race" tab. And when you're on our website or FaceBook site check out details of the April 6th and April 20nd familiarization runs.
Start and Finish At Village Park
You can find our Race Central at Cumberland Village Park, east end of Dunsmuir Avenue beside Coal Hills BMX Park. Parking is limited so please arrange to car pool, if possible.
Race Start times are as follows: the Full Cumby @ 9:00 am; the Quarter Cumby @ 9:20 am; and the Half Cumby @ 9:50 am. Check-in opens approximately 1 hour before the start of each event.
New This Year - Cut-Off Times
In an effort to support the safety of our runners and volunteers, we will be instituting cut-off times on both the Full and Half Cumby race courses. Full details, including course maps, are available on our website www.thecumby.ca.
Our Custom Wood Medals Making A Repeat Performance
We will be awarding our custom wood cross cut medals to the top 3 finishers in each age and gender category.
A Bit About The Quarter Cumby
In 2019 we introduced our shorter event as an opportunity for people new to trail running and for our younger runners to experience trail running and racing in the forest, and to allow others simply to explore the Cumberland Community Forest at a slower pace. The shorter event continues to grow in popularity, and we want to encourage everyone to learn about trail racing in our gnarly Cumberland Hills.
We have special rates for our younger runners in the Quarter Cumby! We really want to encourage youth to participate in trail running. All Quarter Cumby registrants who are 18 and under (as of race day) will get half price entry fees ($15 early bird and $20 thereafter). Discounts are applied when you complete your registration and checkout.
Children and Youth Running The Cumby
Registrants must be 16 and older on race day to register for the Full Cumby. We trust that parents and guardians will know their child's athletic capacity. All Cumby participants under 19 must have parental consent, and parents/guardians must review the special on-line waiver relating to minors, and by completion of on-line registration are considered to have accepted all the terms and conditions of the waiver. We always recommend that children and youth run with an adult - this is an important race safety issue.
Our Volunteers
Conducting 3 simultaneous races involving over hundreds of runners who traipse across a large swath of mountain is no simple task. Over 100 volunteers will hopefully make this a memorable running experience for you. Be sure to show your appreciation!
Visit our website www.thecumby.ca for more detail on this year's great event.
The Cumberland hills are truly a special place. Thank you for registering and "May the Forest be With You!"
