Hey there!
For those of you that don’t know, I am a special education teacher for students ages 18-22. I teach a transition program focused on preparing students for the workforce and life after school! This is my first year as a teacher, and many of the highlights of my first school year have been related to Unified Sports. I took over as the head coach of the Unified Basketball team at my school this past fall, and we had an amazing season. We went 9-0, and most of these wins saw every player on my roster scoring a basket. A highlight of the season was playing in a fundraiser game against the local police departments and raising over $4,000 for our Unified Sports program. This past winter, I started the Unified Strength and Conditioning program at our school, and we just wrapped up our first season. Students participated in workouts over 6 weeks, and saw so much improvement in their fitness levels! We placed third overall out of 18 schools and were awarded medals by the Special Olympics! Seeing the athletes/my students’ happiness, improvement, and teamwork is so inspiring. Unified Sports, Unified Club, Unified PE class, etc. are moments filled with smiles, laughs, happy tears, and friendship. None of this would be possible with Special Olympics and I am so grateful for the opportunities that have been provided to my students and students across MA through this organization.
