My Story…
I am once again putting on my running shoes to run the Falmouth Road Race to support the incredible work of William's Be Yourself Challenge and to honor the life and legacy of William Wolfgang Shaw.
The world lost William - my best friend Sue's son - when he was only 9 years old. He was at a time in his life when he was discovering and owning who he was. Despite battling anxiety and self doubt, he was finding the courage to be himself, and adopted 'Be Yourself' as his mantra in what would be the final year of his life.
Moving through the grief that followed his death, his family and their community found purpose and meaning in an effort that was started to help William's own friends who were struggling with his death. Soon after, William's Be Yourself Challenge became an official nonprofit dedicated to give children agency over their feelings and teaching them that it is powerful and brave to share their emotions.
William's death and being involved with WBYC has helped me tune in to myself, become more comfortable with grief and recognize the importance of connecting with others who are going through similar experiences.
I'd appreciate your support for this cause and fledgling organization that I have no doubt will make an impact on communities and their emotional worlds.
