November 4, 2022 is a day that is forever branded into my mind. That’s the day that I got the call that my big sister, Mary, had passed away at the age of 47 from complications of Crohn’s Disease. I miss her beyond words every day.
She was diagnosed in 1985 just before her 10th birthday and she lived every day of her life from that point on in varying levels of pain and discomfort. But you would often never know it because of her unmatched positive attitude and her fierce desire to make people happy.
She fought fearlessly to help find a cure, raising thousands of important dollars toward research. She ran two half marathons, in 2009 in Napa and 2010 in Boston, with Team Challenge, which is the amazing group that raises money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. She was chosen to give the speech at the welcome dinner for the 2010 race. This was one of her most cherished experiences.
I will be running in the 2024 Falmouth Road Race with Team Challenge. It is my absolute honor to step in for her to continue the effort to find a cure for these brutal and relentless diseases. I hope to do it with half of her class and grace and I hope that you will be inspired to help continue her legacy.
