My Story…

Research has shown that housing insecurity has drastic impacts on educational achievement, job opportunities, and mental and physical well-being, making it one of the greatest obstacles to escaping cyclical poverty. Access to housing is a fundamental human right and a crucial step towards transformative change at both the individual and community levels. I am running for The Home for Little Wanderers this year because of their unmatched commitment to alleviating housing insecurity for children, families, and young adults in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York.

Each year, The Home serves about 15,000 young people and families. There are many values that make The Home a remarkable organization, but their commitment to establishing permanency for the folks it serves makes it particularly special. The presence of “family”, however it is defined, has been shown to greatly improve the outcomes of children and young adults. Across their programs, The Home provides caring, long-term mentors to the youth they serve. In addition, The Home co-founded the Massachusetts Permanency Practice Alliance (MPPA) to ensure vulnerable children can stay home, go home, or find a long-term home.

This value of permanency extends beyond ages 0-17 when programming is most robust for youth experiencing housing insecurity, abuse, or neglect. The Home offers programming for young adults ages 18-26 that “age out” of state care, but still need support and guidance on housing, education, jobs, and self-sufficiency. Experiences had in our early 20s are large determinants of the course of our lives. At this age, folks are particularly vulnerable to homelessness, unemployment, incarceration, early pregnancy, substance abuse, and other hardships, underscoring the value of secure housing and positive mentors on the lives of at risk young adults. For the estimated 4.2 million youth and young adults in the United States who experience homelessness each year, programming like this is life changing.
