My Story…
Hi I'm Ted!
This is my second year raising for Samaritans, but only my first year actually getting to run! (Last year I was sidelined by injury at the last minute).
Last year we raised $3,000+, and I didn't even get to run! Can we beat that this year?!
I have a special connection to Samaritans, because my father has dedicated so much time, effort, and love to this organization over the years. It's been really special to witness him give to this cause so selflessly, and I want to support too. I'm excited to get to do this alongside him.
The mission of Samaritans is an important one. Everyone struggles with their own mental health issues, and it's a tragedy to see some find suicide as the only way out. I've personally been touched by suicide when a high school lacrosse teammate ended his own life a few years after we graduated. His memory stays with me all these years later, because he was a happy kid, came from a loving family, who had access to resources, and education, and everything you'd think would make a young man thrive. And yet despite all that he still felt compelled to end his own life. Samaritans helps those who find themselves in this kind of crisis.
I hope you'll join me in supporting this wonderful organization and this meaningful cause.
Let's go!!
Description
The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands is a nonprofit organization that provides support to people experiencing crises. Our mission is suicide prevention: we are dedicated to helping people contemplating suicide or personally affected by suicide.
In 2021 (the most recent year for which data is available), there were 596 deaths by suicide in Massachusetts (a rate of 8.5 per 100,000). In 2020 (the most recent year for which county data is available), Barnstable County had the third highest suicide rate in Massachusetts (14.4/100,000).
For those who may be struggling, grieving, or wanting to understand how to better support those in their lives, we have programs to help.
Crisis Lines are available 24/7 to anyone looking for support. There is no reason too great or too small to call – whatever the reason, we’re here to listen. The lines are free, anonymous and confidential. Reach us at 508-548-8900 or dial 988.
Community Education programs provide free materials for tabling events and host educational presentations and trainings to help community members learn about suicide prevention strategies.
Grief Services programs are available for those who have experienced the death of someone close to them by suicide. These resources help to provide loss survivors with various avenues for connection in ways and at times that are right for them.
Outreach Services programs provide direct support to specific at-risk populations. Currently, our Senior Outreach program is available to individuals who are 55 years or older, allowing an opportunity to receive weekly phone personal phone support from a matched volunteer.
Your support of Team Samaritans will help us continue to provide these lifesaving programs and services to those who reach out for help.
