This year on Black Friday enjoy an outdoor experience with family and friends, creating memories that last a lifetime and contribute to a healthy lifestyle, rather than spending money on needless holiday gifts that too often quickly end up in our landfills. Plastic Free Delaware (aka Zero Waste First State) strives to reduce single-use plastic pollution in our communities and watersheds, and to cultivate a “zero waste” approach to life where Reduce, Repair, and Reuse are emphasized even before Recycle – striving for a circular economy and sustainable use of materials and resources. As such as swag and awards will be reusable or sustainable, we will strive to recycle beverage containers, minimize trash, and compost food waste & organics at this event.

WHY
-With the Black Friday 5K we choose to “opt outside” and be together with family and friends (new and old!) for a fun, outdoor activity during the long holiday weekend, all while supporting a good cause! Founded in 2010, Plastic Free Delaware (aka Zero Waste First State) is a community- based, nonprofit organization focused on making Delaware a better, cleaner, healthier place by reducing the use of single-use plastic and encouraging zero waste practices. With the help of our tireless volunteer corps, we provide educational programs and undertake
advocacy for policy changes at the federal, state level and local levels. In 2019, PFD founded YES!, the Youth Environmental Summit,, for Delaware high school students and the 2023 YES! was attended by 500+ students from 30 high schools. In 2022, PFD launched the Delaware Community Composting Initiative to reduce food waste and encourage organics composting.
Your participation in the Black Friday 5K helps PFD expand its educational reach with these and other programs, and helps keep Delaware’s schools, watersheds, and communities clean and healthy.
The Black Friday 5k aims to be a GREEN & sustainable event
