My Story…
My younger brother Russ died by suicide in 1987 when he was 16. I can't help but wonder if he would be alive today if our society were more open.
Suicide affects us in many ways: stigma stops people from asking for help and compounds the trauma for those of us left behind. The Distress Centres of Greater Toronto offer free counselling to suicide-loss survivors and I'm one of them. This counselling helped me understand and accept the far-reaching effects of stigma, shame, and trauma. It has changed my life.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15- to 34-year-olds in Canada. Every day 12 people die by suicide in Canada and more than 200 attempt suicide and are saved and go on to fulfilling lives.
Together we can remove the stigma and change the narrative. Suicide is preventable. There is hope.
Please help raise money for free services provided by the Distress Centres of Greater Toronto.
Description
Thank you for your generous support of our third annual Walk to End Suicide event. Since we launched this event in 2022, we have been overwhelmed by the support our community has shown in supporting our critically needed, free mental health programs and services.
This event shines a light on World Suicide Prevention Day (Tuesday September 10, 2024) and continues to highlight action that will help reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts globally, along with continuing to de-stigmatize mental health.
Though the event is just one day, your support resonates every day for those in need.
Thanks again,
Robert Ridge
