Wear the Proper Gear!
- Helmet - An essential part of your cycling gear offering crucial protection against head injuries. You must wear a helmet in order to participate in the Wheels event.
- Cycling Clothing - Dress in layers to pull away sweat, insulate, and protect you from the elements. Wearing layers also makes it easy to remove and add layers to regulate your temperature while cycling. Technical synthetic fibers—lightweight polyester, nylons, and stretch fabrics—move with you and dry quickly.
- Shorts and Tights - These help to reduce chafing and can provide extra comfort during your ride.
- Jersey - Usually made with moisture absorbing materials that draw sweat away to keep you dry.
- Gloves - Bike gloves have padded palms to absorb road vibrations when riding and prevent road rash in the event of a crash.
- Shoes and Socks - Dedicated cycling shoes are the best choice. Running shoes are okay for casual riders but are not ideal for long distances. Socks are important for comfort and sweat absorption.
- Sunglasses – Although this isn't an essential, it will make your experience more enjoyable.
- ID - Carry your personal ID and insurance cards with you.
ABC Quick Check
Air
- Check Tire pressure. Use a gauge to verify the tires are inflated to the recommended pressure.
- Check to ensure there is no damage to the tires or sidewalls.
Brakes
- Check brakes and brake pads and adjust if necessary.
- Check to ensure cables and housing are lubricated and not frayed.
Crank Set
- Check the crank set. (Bottom bracket, crank arms, chain rings). Check this by attempting to move the left and right crank arms sideways. You should never ride on a loose crank arm or unsecured bracket.
Quick Releases
- Quick-release hubs must be tight. The proper pressure is obtained by pushing on the lever so it leaves an impression on your hand.
- The closed lever should face up and back to avoid snagging while you ride.
- Quick release breaks need to be in a closed position and should not be rubbing on the rims while in this position.
- Quick release seat clamps need to be closed and your seat should be at the correct height for you.
Check (out your ride)
- Take a test ride to see if your bike is in working order to ride.
- Any adjustments that still need to be made should be done before you ride.
