WINTER RIP SWIM - JULY 13, 2024
Taking on “The Rip” in winter is a significant challenge. It is a non-wetsuit swim and as such it offers experienced swimmers the chance to gain some real satisfaction by doing something that very few people have ever done.
The water temperature is likely to be about 12 degrees Celsius so you will need to be well-acclimatised to the cold.
Keep in mind that there is no steam room or sauna to warm up in after your swim so you need to be prepared for this.
Distance: 3.2km - but you are likely to swim closer to 3.5
Time: Most swims take from 65 - 85 minutes
Enter Solo
This year everyone will enter as a solo swimmer. If there are others you wish to swim alongside that is fine, but remember you will not want to wait for them as you may get cold.
Field limit: 40
Cost:
Solo Early bird - $590. (Friday February 23 - Thursday March 7)
Standard Solo - $690 (March 8 onwards subject to availability!)
Dedicated paddler $300 (up to 6 available - can only manage up to 4 swimmers who must then stay together)
If you book a dedicated paddler, they will be able to manage you in a group of up to 4, but no more than that. We will supply the paddler from our team of experienced people who have all escorted swimmers before.
Even without booking a dedicated paddler, there will still be plenty of boats to help you navigate and keep you safe.
What you get:
The experience of a lifetime
Name on our honour board on the website (only 68 swimmers have crossed in winter so far)
- Quality merchandise available only to swimmers
A very high ratio of safety craft to guide you across to Point Lonsdale pier
All boat transfers
Assistance with your gear on the day
Qualifying swim dates - June 1st at Williamstown Beach, Melbourne, 10am - 12 noon.
This is a difficult swim and so we want to make sure you are prepared and will be safe on the day of your crossing.
For this reason, we insist on every swimmer doing a qualifying swim. Hypothermia is a real possibility on a swim like this so you need to prepare well to avoid that occurring.
The qualifying swim (June 1, Williamstown Beach, 10am) is a 3km swim in approximately 13 Degrees (celsius) without a wetsuit. A latex, Silicon or Neoprene cap is allowed. If you do not make the qualifying swim you will either be offered a 2nd attempt or an 80% refund.
Swimmer speed: You must be able to cover 3km in under 66 minutes. There will be some leniency here depending on the conditions on the day of the qualifying swim. If you can't make the qualifying date, you MUST supply other evidence of your ability.
Entry to this swim is at the discretion of the swim director.
