My Story…
Dear friends & family,
I’m reaching out to ask for your support in honoring our son Jonathan’s memory by contributing to a cause close to my heart—Thumbs Up.
Thumbs Up is a grassroots organization in Elk River, Minnesota, that supports individuals facing mental health challenges while working to eliminate the stigma surrounding it. Their mission of “KEEP MOVING FORWARD” resonates deeply with me, reflecting the journey we all face in life.
This is the second year I’ve participated in their 5k run, and each time, I’m reminded of the importance of this work. Thumbs Up offers a wide range of programs, from after-school support for teens to small group sessions for those grieving the loss of loved ones to suicide. They provide financial assistance for professional counseling, giving over $40,000 last year alone. Thumbs Up is embedded in our community, serving people of all ages, in schools, senior living communities, and beyond.
Since last year, I’ve become more involved with Thumbs Up, and in return, they’ve invested in me. I’m now trained to offer QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) GateKeeper classes, a life-saving response to those in crisis, funded entirely by Thumbs Up.
This September, I’ll be running the 5k again in memory of Jonathan, who we tragically lost to suicide in April 2019. Linda will be joining me this year, as well as our son, Dan, and our daughter in law, Kendal. Together, we’ve formed “Jonathan’s Team” to raise funds for Thumbs Up.
We invite you to join us by offering your thoughts and prayers, and if you feel led, by helping us reach our goal of raising $6250. Your support means so much—not just in Jonathan’s memory, but in helping others who may be struggling. Positive actions like this lift everyone up, including ourselves, and we hope that your contribution brings you a lift as well.
If you’re unable to give at this time, that’s okay. Jonathan wouldn’t want anyone to feel pressured, and neither do we. Your thoughts, prayers, or even considering taking a QPR course are just as valuable. If you can contribute, whether $10 or $1,000, know that your gift will make a difference and mean a lot to me and to the whole Payne family.
Thank you for your time, and may God bless you in your own journey.
With love, Joe
