My Story…

Every year, Homeboy Industries 5K holds a special meaning for me. I run in memory of my brother, Alfred "Freddy" Luna Jr., and Tia Ruth "Cuca" Fry. They filled every room with laughter, positivity, and an unwavering spirit. Like many of the men and women at Homeboy Industries, Freddy and Cuca dared to take a second chance; in their later years, they went back to school, pursued new careers, and rekindled their passions.

We often hear the surprised reaction after meeting someone formerly incarcerated: "They're so funny, smart, and kind!"  Why the surprise? Just like Freddy, the men and women at Homeboy Industries are multifaceted individuals. Their past doesn't erase their humanity or their potential. This race is about breaking stereotypes and showing everyone deserves a second chance. It's about recognizing the people behind the stories, the families who love them, and the fight for a brighter future.

It takes immense courage to rewrite your story. Team That's Your Pedo, a name that embodies Freddy's infectious humor, has been running for eight years in memory of those who dared to reinvent themselves. Freddy's playful catchphrase, "That's Your Pedo," was a reminder to laugh in the face of difficulty. It's a reminder of his spirit and the spirit shared by everyone at Homeboy Industries who takes that courageous first step towards a new life.

Our team's commitment extends beyond the finish line. Each step has been fueled by the belief that everyone deserves a chance to rise above their past and create a life filled with dignity, purpose, and love.

Freddy and Tia, I love and miss you every day. This run is for you and countless others who deserve a chance to rewrite their story. Together, we can make a difference!
