The Society for Children and Youth of BC is a not-for-profit organization based in Vancouver that serves children province-wide. Our mission is to foster the well-being and resilience of children and youth in British Columbia by advancing their civic, political, economic, social, cultural and legal rights. Having been in operation for 50 years, we have a rich history of work and a proven track record of success.
Our current primary projects include Child and Youth Friendly Communities (CYFC), Child Rights Public Awareness, and the Child and Youth Legal Centre. The Child and Youth Legal Centre provides free legal services directly to young people under 19, with a particular focus on vulnerable, immigrant, and Indigenous children and youth. This is an essential service which is not offered by anyone else in BC for non-criminal cases. Our Child Rights Public Awareness campaign delivers workshops and educational materials on children's rights to youth and adult stakeholders throughout the province, with materials available in 7 different languages. Finally, the CYFC program works with municipalities to help build a better city for children and youth through consultation and programming directly for children regarding various planning initiatives.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) sets out rights for children and young people (18 years old and younger). On November 20th, 1989 the UNCRC was unanimously adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Almost every country in the world eagerly ratified it throughout the next decade, making it the most widely ratified human rights document in the world.
The UNCRC reflects a well-researched global consensus on what childhood should be and outlines the minimum standards for the healthy development of children and youth. It also recognizes children as rights holders for the first time and focuses on their specific needs. These rights are indivisible and inalienable — a child can neither give up nor lose his or her rights, regardless of behaviour, family context, or parental wishes.
Canada played a leading role in its development and ratified the Convention in 1991. Once countries ratify (agree to uphold) the convention they are legally bound to what it says and are obliged to review their domestic laws and practices regarding children and to make any changes needed to reach the minimum standards set by the Convention.
