My Story…
As many of you know, we've struggled with infertility. 7 miscarriages, 4 IUIs and 6 IVF cycles later, as we prepare for IVF round 7, we'll be walking Fertility Matters 6K for 1 in 6.
Treatment costs are steep, with no guarantee of success. As much of a financial burden as it is, we're lucky to have access to clinics and the financial ability to pursue treatments. Not everyone does.
Only 5 provinces offer funding and it’s minimal. Ontario "covers" one IVF cycle but IVF drugs ($3,000-$8,000), additional tech. ($2,000+), genetic testing ($3,000+) and embryo storage ($1,000+) are not included. An out-of-pocket IVF cycle is $20,000 (+ genetic testing and embryo storage).
It takes an average 3.6 IVF cycles to achieve pregnancy.
In many regions no clinics offer funding, even though millions of funding dollars are unused yearly. Most Canadian employers don't include fertility/family building in their benefits. Some provinces/territories only have a couple clinics.
1 in 6 couples in Canada experience infertility. I am 1 in 6. I will be walking for our losses, our journey, my infertility sisters and to raise awareness and advocacy efforts.
Donations go to FMC programs to raise awareness and advocacy efforts aimed at achieving equitable access to fertility care.
