My Story…
Economist magazine cites the protection of civil liberties as one its key measures of the health of a democracy. I could not agree more. In a world where autocracy is on the rise I am so grateful to be living in a free and democratic society like Canada. And while I believe that Canada is and can continue to be a beacon to the world of equality and justice, we cannot take the freedoms that we enjoy here for granted.
In the past 36 months we have seen the federal government invoke the emergency powers act – effectively suspending all civil liberties protections, and provincial governments routinely invoking or threatening to invoke the “notwithstanding clause” – so that they can cast aside the charter of rights at their whim.
I am more convinced than ever that the work of the CCLA is essential to protecting the fabric of our democracy. That is why I am seeking your support for my participation in CCLA's 2024 Walk for Civil Liberties.
