Engineers Without Borders UIUC is a student-led nonprofit that builds a better world by empowering communities to meet their basic human needs while equipping students to solve the world's most pressing challenges. We realize this mission through projects such as bridges, water and wastewater systems, and electrical systems.
Our chapter is currently working on projects in the United States, Rwanda, and Malawi. We work to ensure that our projects are sustainable in terms of environmental impact and that they are able to serve the needs of their communities for years to come.
Join us as we run to raise money to build infrastructure for communities around the world!
Why EWB?
We know there are a lot of 5Ks this time of year that benefit great causes. So why should you register for this one?
By joining us at our Stride for Sustainability, every dollar you contribute will go directly towards our international infrastructure projects and reach communities around the world. Your run will have a global impact.
Here are the projects you support:
Chilaweni, Malawi Bridge Project
- Monsoon season isolates 25,000 people due to flooding, cutting off access to markets, hospitals, and schools.
- Mphati River becomes dangerous, making travel impossible for nearly half the year.
- EWB-UIUC has designed and is looking to build a reinforced concrete beam bridge to ensure year-round access this May.
- Our vehicular-rated bridge ensures long-term durability and reliability for the community.
Kamonyi District, Rwanda Water Project
- The community lacks access to potable running water with the nearest water source being a spring 2 km away.
- Unclean water leads to high disease rates, especially among children.
- Our Solution is to implement a gravity-fed water distribution system to provide clean water to 3,000 residents.
Woodford County, Illinois Drinking Water Project
- The 333 village residents are mostly elderly, fixed income/low-income families who are vulnerable to the harmful effects of water contamination
- The current water treatment plant has operated since the late 1800s and needs to be replaced; the foundation is crumbling and the building is leaning to one side
- The community’s water is contaminated with arsenic, a toxic chemical that can lead to cancer, kidney failure, and other health complications
- The village water tower has rusted on both the inside and outside and and needs to be recoated to prevent further damage
