My Story…
Why I'm Running – Ammar’s Story 🌈
For me, this run is more than a fundraising event. It’s a full-circle moment.
As someone who fled Syria because of who I am, I never imagined I would one day be running proudly, hand in hand with my partner, in a public celebration of queer love and freedom. Growing up, my identity had to remain hidden. Being openly gay was not an option. It was a risk that could cost me everything.
When I arrived in Canada, I carried the weight of fear and trauma. But over time, I found not only physical safety, but also space to heal, grow, and belong. Today, I’m proud to be part of Pomerleau, where I work as an Environmental Coordinator and contribute to the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee; a space where lived experience is not just welcomed, but valued.
This year, I’m running with my partner, who shares a similar journey, and with colleagues who have become like family. Together, we’re raising our voices for those who are still silenced. We’re running for the many who are still waiting for the chance to be safe, to be seen, to be free.
Rainbow Refugee gave people like us a path forward. With your support, they can continue doing the same for others.
Please consider donating. Every step we take is for someone who needs hope.
With gratitude,
Ammar
