WINTER RIP SWIM - JULY 5, 2025 - 2pm
Taking on “The Rip” in winter is a significant challenge. It is a non-wetsuit swim and as such it offers experienced swimmers the chance to gain some real satisfaction by doing something that very few people have ever done.
The water temperature is likely to be about 12 degrees Celsius so you will need to be well-acclimatised to the cold.
Distance: 3.5
Time: Most swims take from 55 - 75 minutes
Enter Solo
This year everyone will enter as a solo swimmer. If there are others you wish to swim alongside that is fine, but remember you will not want to wait for them as you may get cold.
Field limit: 50
Cost:
Solo Early bird - $610 (Friday February 14 - Friday February 21)
Standard Solo - $710 (February 22 onwards subject to availability!)
Under 18 - 15% discount (minimum age is 12 but please email us about that!)
Kayakers: (maximum of 8 available)
If you'd like a dedicated kayaker, you can pay for one. The cost is $350. You can split that among your team if you wish. Teams can only be a maximum of 5 and the kayaker can only manage you if you are able to stay together so choose your swimmers carefully according to their speed.
All kayakers are supplied by us as they are trained to do this job.
What you get:
The experience of a lifetime
Name on our honour board on the website (only 98 swimmers have crossed in winter so far)
- Quality merchandise available only to swimmers
- Option to book in for a sauna at the finish (a traditional wood-fired Finnish Style version!)
- A very high ratio of safety craft to guide you across to Point Lonsdale
All boat transfers
Assistance with your gear on the day
Qualifying swim date - June 1st at Williamstown Beach, Melbourne, 10am - 12 noon.
This is a difficult swim and so we want to make sure you are prepared and will be safe on the day of your crossing.
For this reason, we insist on every swimmer doing a qualifying swim. Hypothermia is a real possibility on a swim like this so you need to prepare well to avoid that occurring.
The qualifying swim (June 1, Williamstown Beach, 10am) is a 3km swim in approximately 13 Degrees (celsius) without a wetsuit. A latex, Silicon or Neoprene cap is allowed. If you do not make the qualifying swim you will either be offered a 2nd attempt or an 80% refund.
Swimmer speed: You should be able to cover 3km in under 66 minutes ( or at least close to that). There will be some leniency here depending on the conditions on the day of the qualifying swim. If you can't make the qualifying date, you MUST supply other evidence of your ability.
Entry to this swim is at the discretion of the swim director.
Make your swim even more memorable by raising money for Cancer Council Victoria. It will be very easy to set up your page as your register.
