Important Information and FAQ's
Race kit pick up is from 9am-10am
All Canicross Racers will require an equipment check prior to BIB pick up. If gear is deemed unsuitable for racing, you will be relegated to the FUN RUN.
**SAFETY: Reactive Dogs**
If you have a reactive dog or want some extra space for your dog, ask for a yellow pinny at race kit pick up. The yellow pinny will signal others to keep a comfortable distance away. It is each handlers responsibility to control their dog(s) and respect the rules of the event. Race marshals have the authority and duty to instruct any handler that does not have control of their dog to remove themselves from the immediate area to allow control to be regained. If a handler cannot control their dog they may be removed from the event. If you are wearing a yellow pinny you are expected to ensure that you keep a safe distance from other dogs and people.
Nothing is worse than having to stop for a poop while you're running your hearts out to gain ground on the teams in front of you. Do your best to let your dog do their business prior to race start to avoid any slow downs. It is expected that you will pick up after your dog, trash bins will be provided at the staging area as well as at the aid station.
For everybody's safety, dogs that are behaving aggressively (beyond reactive) and are not being adequately controlled by their handler will be removed from the event by a race marshal.
**SAFETY DURING THE RACE:**
Passing: All participants are expected to alert any team that is in front of them of an intent to pass on the course. "Trail Right/Left", "Passing on your Right/Left" are acceptable phrases to alert a team that is about to be overtaken. The passing team must ensure that the team being passed has acknowledged the announcement and allow a moment for the team being passed to move over and bring their dog to the side if needed (may be needed with teams that have the yellow pinny)
**Being Passed:** All participants are expected to acknowledge an announcement from a passing team by raising a hand or waving the passing team on by. If a team with a yellow pinny is being passed, it is recommended that you bring your dog in to your side and move to the side of the trail to allow for a safe pass.
Any participant that has been reported to a race marshal for failing to adhere to the above mandatory safety rules will be disqualified from the race and a review of the incident by the safety committee will be done. Participants that fail to adhere to the safety rules could face a potential suspension for future events.
Race marshals will be identified by their high visibility safety vests.
**NO GREET EVENT**
The Muddy Paw is a no greet event. This has been instituted to help reduce stress to the dogs and to limit the chances of any unfortunate interactions between dog-dog, or dog-human.
Be aware that the trails are still open to the public during the event and you may come across other people and dogs. Canadian Canicross Sports endeavours to place signage at public entrances to the trails to advise users of the race and to leash their dogs.
If you have an aggressive dog - please consider participating in the virtual event to avoid stress, anxiety, or potential injury.
If you are unsure that a Canicross event would be suitable for your dog, we encourage you to come spectate (with your dog)or volunteer at an event to get a sense of what the environment is like.
How will the race begin?
Race wave will begin at 10:15AM with up to 6 teams per wave. Waves will be departing every two minutes until the entire field is on the course. 10k teams will be departing first. You are expected to enter the starting chute at least one minute prior to your wave time. A race marshal will be in the starting chute to ensure proper spacing between teams. Waves will be organized so as to limit the amount of yellow pinnies in any given wave. If you are in a wave with more than one yellow pinny, you must ensure that you are far enough away from the other yellow pinny to avoid any unwanted situations.
Parking
Parking is free for participants, volunteers, and spectators - you'll be directed by volunteers.
How will the Race be timed?
The race will be manually timed so race bib must be on the front of your chest clearly visible for the timers.
Where do I pick up my race kit?
Your race kit will be ready for pick up at Monora Park on race day by the gazebo.
Can I run with more than one dog?
Participants in the fun run and the virtual runs can run with more than one dog.
What gear is required for the race events?
For the 5 and 10k race events dogs are required to be in a harness that allows for non restricted motion and allows for pulling
(such as an x-back harness, typically these harnesses have a Y shape that rests on the dogs chest.) Remember that equipment will be checked prior to registration.
A line that has elastic properties is ideal rather than a line with no elastic recoil.
The runner should have a Canicross harness or belt that allows them to run hands free.
Do I need Canicross gear for the fun run/walk?
The only gear required for the fun run/walk is a leash and collar at minimum.
Awards and Timing
All finishers will receive a medal and special awards for top 3 finishers of the race categories.
Timing is manual - it is important to clearly display your bib on your front chest so that our timers can see your number and record your time accurately.
