My Story…

Hello,

My name is Lyla and I was born May 7, 2022. I was born with a heart condition that my Mommy caught and pushed for the doctors to have me examined. Once they found out I had a heart condition I was transported to the Alberta Children’s Hospital NICU where I had an Echo and ECG done to confirm that I had 2 holes in my heart and an interrupted aorta arch and had to under go my first open heart surgery to have this repaired.

Once my mommy and grandma had a meeting with my cardiologist and learned what was going to happen I was transported by plane to the Stollery Children’s Hospital NICO where I had my heart repaired on May 16th 2022. The surgery went great and I was doing good but 2 days later I got really sick with ecoli sepsis but thankfully for my nurse she new the signs and got me on the correct antibiotics to help me get better. 3 weeks later I was well enough to be transferred back to the Calgary Childrens Hospital and spent one more week in the hospital to finish my antibiotics. On June 10th my Mommy and Daddy got to bring me home for the first time and my heart was doing great and I was allowed to be a normal baby.

That all changed on Dec 24th 2022 when I had another Echo and ECG that confirmed that I had a narrowing in my heart and scar tissue was growing that was causing an issue. I was sent back up to the Stollery Children’s Hospital for my second open heart surgery February 26th which was my grandpa birthday. The surgeon was able to scrap off 70% of the scar tissue but by doing this it caused my heart to have a heart block and I went in for another open heart operation to have my permanent pacemaker put in and I was sent home 3 days later.

I was doing great again and was thriving but went for another Echo and ECG on December 2023 where they confirmed that my heart was sick and I needed to under go another open heart surgery called the Ross procedure. This is a very aggressive surgery on the heart. I went back to Edmonton and had surgery March 15th. The surgeon said that I did great and my heart surgery went well but I didn’t want to wake up. The doctors ran more tests on me and found that I had the common cold and what they call old Covid, this caused a complication which caused me to get tubical pneumonia and I again was really sick and spent 3 weeks in the hospital. I spent Easter in the Stollery and had all my grandparents come and visited me. They made my Easter special. I was discharged and got to go home April 9th and was told I was doing great.

Then came December 2024 and I again went for another echo and ECG and they sent me back to the Stollery for a cath procedure where they found that my Mitro Valve was leaking to much which was causing me to have hyrotension in my heart and I was sent back to the Stollery Feb 7 for my 5th open heart surgery. This surgery they replaced my valve with a cow valve. My surgeon and cardio team feel that this should last me 5 years and I shouldn’t need to go for another surgery until I’m around 8-9 years old.

Since my last surgery I have been doing great, thriving and growing. I am excited to celebrate my 3rd birthday in 3 weeks.

The heartbeats foundation has helped a lot for every surgery as they provided my parents with gas/food/tim hortons gift cards to use while we are in Edmonton. Any donations would be greatly appreciated and could help families that have to go through what I’ve gone through in the last 3 years.

Thank you for reading about my heart journey ❤️
