Ted's Run for Literacy 2025!
Ted's Run for Literacy is an out-and-back course starting near the Witch's Hut in Kildonan Park.
The 2 km walkers and runners stay entirely within the park. It's one loop on the designated walkway next to the road.
The 10 km and 5 km runners exit Kildonan Park and proceed down Scotia Avenue towards St. John's Park.
The 5 km turn-around point is located at 328 Scotia Avenue.
The 10 km runners continue along Scotia Avenue to St. Johns Park. After one loop of St. John's Park runners return via Scotia. Be prepared for a little 'off-road' fun in St. John's Park.
Our course meanders alongside the banks of the mighty Red River, through a tree-lined, old-Winnipeg, North End neighbourhood. There are two water stations.
Ted's Run for Literacy is a fully inclusive event. All runners, walkers, and wheelers (wheelchair participants) are welcomed. For the safety of participants, skateboards and bicycles are not permitted on the course.

About Ted's Run for Literacy
Ted’s Run for Literacy was established in 2010 following the death of Ted Swain on May 3rd, 2009. Ted was a passionate teacher of English at Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg. He was also a dedicated running coach who nurtured hundreds of novice runners. Ted is remembered fondly by the running community with whom he identified to his last step. Ted’s Run for Literacy has donated almost $100,000 to help break the cycle of childhood poverty. We are indeed, the little race that could. In partnership with The Winnipeg Foundation, proceeds generated from Ted's Run for Literacy support two non-profit charitable organizations, LiteracyWorks and CanU.
LiteracyWORKS is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides adults with literacy and numeracy instruction as essential life skills. LiteracyWORKS envisions a Winnipeg in which all adults are literate and able to participate fully in our cultural, economic and social worlds.
CanU provides hundreds of kids with remarkable opportunities for learning and leadership. Can U is an after school program that inspires hope and confidence in Winnipeg children. The 'big ideas' of CanU are: Literacy, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Mentorship, and Hope & Confidence.
The Winnipeg Foundation is Canada’s first community foundation, established in 1921. The Winnipeg Foundation's mission is to be a catalyst for strengthening community well being, now and for future generations, by promoting philanthropy, creating partnerships and supporting diverse charitable organizations.
We are pleased to announce that our 10KM event has been included in MRA's 2025 Classic Race Series and our 5KM and 2KM events have been included in MRA's 2025 Youth Race Series. Thank you MRA for this distinction!
What is the MRA Youth Series?
The Manitoba Runners’ Association (MRA) is proud to offer a Youth Running Series for runners 16 years of age and under (age calculated as of January 1st). The emphasis of this Series is to introduce and encourage participation in the sport of road-running for health, fun and friendship. This series consists of races with distances of 5k and under. An MRA Membership is required to participate. A school can become a member for as little as $50.00.
What is the MRA Classic Series?
The MRA Classic Race Series is a series of MRA sanctioned events run on courses certified accurate by Athletics Canada. Distances vary from 5k to the Full Marathon and are timed by an MRA-approved timer. The emphasis of this series is to encourage friendly competition among runners 17 years of age and older (age calculated as of January 1st).
Points are earned based on placings compared to other MRA members at the races in the series and are used to calculate the top three runners (men & women) in each five year age category. New is a top 3 overall non-binary category! These winners are awarded for their achievement at the annual MRA Awards Celebration in November.
